Active object
The one selected object that tools treat as the main target, usually the last clicked
Also called Active selection
What is the active object in Blender?
The active object is the one selection that tools treat as the main target, usually the last object you clicked. Other objects can be selected at the same time, but many commands read settings from, or act on, the active one. In Blender, it is outlined in a lighter orange than the rest.
Think of it like this
Like the person holding the microphone in a group on stage: everyone is up there together, but the one with the mic is who the room listens to.

How the active object works
- 01Click an object, or Shift-click to add more to the selection.
- 02The last one clicked becomes active and shows a lighter outline.
- 03Shift-click a selected object to make it active without deselecting the others.
- 04Tools like join, parent and link materials use the active object as the target or source.
Active object vs selected objects
| Property | Active object | Selected objects |
|---|---|---|
| How many | One at most | Any number |
| Outline in Blender | Lighter orange | Darker orange |
| Properties editor shows | Its settings | Only the active one’s |
| Role in tools | Target or source | The objects being changed |
Select everything a tool should touch, then make sure the right object is active last, since it decides where joins, parents and copied settings go.
Where the active object is used
- Choosing which object others join into with Ctrl+J
- Setting the parent when parenting several objects with Ctrl+P
- Copying materials or modifiers from one object to many
Beginner tip
Glance at the Properties editor before running a tool on many objects. It always shows the active object, so it tells you which one Blender treats as the main target.
Active object in Morphic
Copilot in Morphic for Blender reads what is selected in the open scene before it writes a script for your request. The add-on’s 3D tab can also generate a 3D model from a selected image.
