Object (3D)

One thing in a 3D scene, such as a mesh, light or camera, with its own transform

Also called 3D object, Scene object

What is an object in 3D?

A 3D object is a single thing in a scene, such as a mesh, light, camera or empty, with its own position, rotation and scale. The object is the container; the shape inside it, like a mesh, is its data. Moving an object moves everything it holds without changing the shape itself.

Think of it like this

Like a framed photo on a wall: you can move, tilt or resize the frame, and the picture inside stays the same until you open the frame and change it.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Create: Building the shape: modeling, sculpting, scanning or generating it.

How an object works

  1. 01Each object has a transform: where it sits, how it turns and how big it is.
  2. 02Inside, it holds data: a mesh, curve, light, camera or armature.
  3. 03Object Mode moves the whole object; Edit Mode changes its data.
  4. 04Several objects can share one set of data, so editing it updates all of them.

Object (3D) vs mesh

Object vs mesh is container vs contents: move, rotate and scale the object in Object Mode, and reshape the mesh in Edit Mode.

Where an object is used

  • Arranging props, lights and cameras in a scene
  • Grouping parts with parenting and collections
  • Reusing one mesh across many objects as linked copies

Beginner tip

Name objects in the Outliner as you add them. Cube.017 means nothing a week later, and clear names make selecting, parenting and exporting much easier.

Object (3D) in Morphic

Copilot in Morphic for Blender reads the open scene’s objects, including their transforms, dimensions, materials and modifiers, before it writes a script for the change you describe. The script runs only after you click Apply.

Object (3D) FAQ

What is an object in Blender?
Anything listed in the Outliner with its own transform: meshes, curves, text, lights, cameras, armatures and empties. Each object holds one block of data, and Object Mode is where you select and arrange them.
What are the types of objects in Blender?
The common types are mesh, curve, text, armature, lattice, empty, light and camera. They all appear in the Add menu, opened with Shift+A in Object Mode, and each type has its own kind of data and editing tools.
What is object data?
The content an object carries: the mesh for a mesh object, the lens settings for a camera, the color and power for a light. In Blender it has its own tab, a green icon, in the Properties editor.
