Wireframe

A see-through view that draws only a model’s edges

Also called Wireframe view, Wire overlay

What is a wireframe in 3D?

A wireframe is a view of a 3D model that draws only its edges, as thin lines, with no filled surfaces. It shows how the mesh is built, where detail is dense, and what hides behind other objects. Artists use it to check topology, and some renders use it as a style.

Think of it like this

It is the steel frame of a building before any walls or glass go on. You can see every beam and look straight through to the other side.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Edge
Vertices are the points, edges join them, and faces fill the gaps.

How a wireframe works

  1. 01The software skips filling faces and draws only the edges between vertices.
  2. 02Edges on the far side stay visible unless hidden lines are switched off.
  3. 03An overlay can lay the wire lines over the normal shaded view.
  4. 04A wireframe render bakes those lines into the final image as a look.

Model in solid view to judge the shape, and switch to wireframe or a wire overlay whenever you need to see how the mesh is built.

Where a wireframe is used

  • Checking edge flow and topology
  • Selecting vertices hidden behind other geometry
  • Portfolio breakdowns that show how a model was built

Beginner tip

Use a wireframe overlay on top of solid shading instead of pure wireframe. You keep the sense of shape and still see every edge.

Wireframe FAQ

How do I show wireframe in Blender?
Press Z and pick Wireframe, or click the wireframe shading button at the top right of the viewport. For lines over shaded surfaces, open the Overlays menu and turn on Wireframe instead.
What is a wireframe render?
A finished image or video where the model’s edges are drawn as visible lines, often over a plain clay surface. Artists use it in breakdowns and product visuals to show the structure behind a model.
Why does my wireframe look so dense?
The mesh probably has more faces than it needs, often from subdivision, sculpting, scanning or AI generation. Decimation or retopology can thin it out, and the wireframe shows the difference straight away.
