Game engine
Software that renders 3D scenes in real time and runs interactive apps
What is a game engine?
A game engine is software for building interactive real-time apps, such as games, simulations and product viewers. It renders 3D scenes many times per second and runs the logic, physics, sound and input that make them interactive. Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot are well-known examples.
Think of it like this
It is like a theater with the stage, lights and crew ready to go: you bring the sets, actors and script, and it runs the show live.
Where it fits in a 3D project
- Create
- Surface
- Rig
- Animate
- Render
- Export
Export: Saving and sharing the result: file formats, engines and printing.
How a game engine works
- 01You import models, textures, animation and sound made in other apps.
- 02You place them in levels and add code or visual scripts for behavior.
- 03Each frame, the engine reads input, updates physics and logic, then renders.
- 04You build the project into an app for PC, console, phone or web.
Game engine vs 3D software
| Property | Game engine | 3D software |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Running interactive scenes live | Making models, animation and renders |
| Rendering | Real time, many frames per second | Real time or slower, higher quality |
| Interaction and code | Built in | Limited or none |
| Modeling tools | Basic | Full |
Build and animate assets in 3D software, then bring them into a game engine when people need to play, explore or interact with them.
Where a game engine is used
- Video games for PC, console, mobile and web
- Architecture walkthroughs and product configurators
- Virtual production sets and real-time film previews
- Training simulations and VR experiences
Beginner tip
Check the engine’s import settings for scale and axes. A model that looks right in your 3D app can arrive tiny, huge or lying on its side.
