Render engine
The software that turns a 3D scene into finished images
Also called renderer
What is a render engine?
A render engine, or renderer, is the software that turns a 3D scene’s models, materials, lights and camera into finished images. Some favor speed and draw frames in real time; others simulate light closely and take longer per image. Most 3D apps include one or more and accept others as plug-ins.
Think of it like this
It is like a darkroom for your 3D scene: you set up the shot, and the engine develops it into a finished photograph.
Where it fits in a 3D project
- Create
- Surface
- Rig
- Animate
- Render
- Export
Render: Lighting the scene and turning it into images or video.
How a render engine works
- 01It reads the scene: geometry, materials, lights and the active camera.
- 02It works out what each pixel sees, by rasterizing, ray tracing or both.
- 03It calculates lighting and shading for every visible point.
- 04It writes the final image, plus any render passes you asked for.
Render engine vs game engine
| Property | Render engine | Game engine |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Make images | Run an interactive app |
| Includes | Lighting, shading, camera output | Rendering plus physics, input, sound, logic |
| Output | Stills and video frames | A playable or interactive build |
Every game engine contains a render engine; choose a standalone renderer for images and video, and a game engine when people need to interact.
Where a render engine is used
- Final stills and animations
- Material and lighting previews while you work
- Product, architecture and film frames
Beginner tip
Learn one engine well before switching. Lighting, sampling and material skills carry over, but each engine’s settings take time to master.
Render engine in Morphic
Morphic does not render your Blender scene. Render it in Blender with your usual engine, then use Send render or Send animation in Morphic for Blender to upload the still or animation to your Morphic assets.
