Light types

Point, sun, spot and area: the four lamps in Blender and how each casts shadows

What are the light types in Blender?

Light types are the kinds of lamp a 3D app offers, each spreading light and casting shadows differently. Blender has four: point, which shines in every direction; sun, which sends parallel light from far away; spot, which shines in a cone; and area, which glows from a flat shape.

Think of it like this

Think of a bare bulb, daylight, a flashlight and a softbox in a photo studio: four tools, each spreading light across the room in its own way.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Render: Lighting the scene and turning it into images or video.

How light types work

  1. 01Add a light with Shift+A > Light and pick its type.
  2. 02Point, spot and area lights fade with distance; sun light is equally strong everywhere.
  3. 03A larger radius, angle or size gives softer, blurrier shadow edges.
  4. 04Strength sets brightness: watts for most lights, a separate irradiance value for the sun.

Where light types are used

  • Point: candles, bulbs and small glowing props
  • Sun: outdoor daylight with crisp, parallel shadows
  • Spot: stage lights, headlights and focused beams
  • Area: soft studio light and light through a window

Beginner tip

For a quick product shot, start with one large area light angled in from the front and side, plus a dim world for fill. Move the light before you raise its strength.

Light types FAQ

Point vs sun vs spot vs area light: which should I use?
Use sun for daylight, area for soft studio or window light, spot for a focused beam, and point for small sources like bulbs and candles. Many scenes pair a sun or area key light with the world environment for fill.
What is a sun light in Blender?
A light that behaves like the sun: its rays arrive parallel from far away, so only its rotation matters, not its position. It lights the whole scene evenly, and its angle setting widens the sun’s disc to soften shadows.
How do I make softer shadows in Blender?
Make the light source bigger. Raise the radius on a point or spot light, the angle on a sun, or the size on an area light. Bigger sources blur shadow edges, the way a cloudy sky softens shadows outdoors.
Why does moving my sun light do nothing?
A sun light’s position has no effect, only its direction. Rotate it instead to change the angle of the light and where the shadows fall.
