Unit scale

How big one unit in a 3D app is in the real world

What is unit scale in 3D?

Unit scale is the setting that decides how big one unit in a 3D app is in real life, such as one meter or one centimeter. Getting it right keeps models the correct size for physics, lighting, 3D printing and moving files between apps. A mismatch makes imports arrive tiny or huge.

Think of it like this

It is like the scale on a map: the drawing looks the same either way, but you need to know whether one square means a meter or a kilometer.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Create: Building the shape: modeling, sculpting, scanning or generating it.

How unit scale works

  1. 01Every 3D app measures positions in its own units.
  2. 02A unit setting ties one unit to a real length, like a meter.
  3. 03Exporters and importers convert between apps’ units, sometimes with a scale factor.
  4. 04Physics, lights and printers read those sizes, so wrong units give wrong results.

Where unit scale is used

  • Modeling furniture, rooms and products at real size
  • Sending models to game engines without resizing
  • Exporting parts for 3D printing in millimeters
  • Getting realistic physics, focus and light falloff

Beginner tip

Before you model, decide the real size of what you are building and set units to match. Then model at that size, so a door is about two meters tall, instead of scaling it later.

Unit scale FAQ

Is one Blender unit a meter?
By default, yes. Blender uses the metric system with a unit scale of 1.0, so one unit is one meter. You can change it in Scene Properties > Units.
How do I set units in Blender?
Open Scene Properties > Units. Choose Metric or Imperial, pick a length unit such as centimeters, and leave Unit Scale at 1.0 unless you need one unit to mean something else.
Why is my model the wrong size when exported?
The two apps assume different units, for example meters in one and centimeters in the other, so the model arrives 100 times too big or small. Match the units in both, or use the exporter’s scale option, and apply scale before exporting.
What unit scale should I use for 3D printing?
Millimeters, since most slicers read files that way. Set your length unit to millimeters, model at real size, and check the dimensions before you export.
