How do I make a rewind sound effect?
Describe the machine rather than the transition. Say what is being wound back, how fast the reel turns, whether the pitch climbs as it accelerates, and how it stops. A generator understands a motor pulling tape past metal far better than it understands rewind.
What is the difference between a rewind and a reverse sound?
A rewind is a machine running a recording backwards, so you hear the motor and the mechanism. A reverse sound is the audio itself played the other way, with no machine in it at all. One dates your scene to a device, the other does not.
Why does my rewind sound like a plain whoosh?
Because there is no mechanism in it. A rush of air alone has nothing turning, so add the detail that gives it a machine: tape moving across metal guides, a reel accelerating, a plastic mechanism clunking as it engages and again as it stops.
How long should a rewind sound be?
Two to three seconds if it marks a jump, ten or more if it runs under a recap. The mistake worth avoiding is stretching a short one to cover a long sequence, since the join always lands somewhere the ear is listening.
Should a rewind end with a clack?
Only if you want the audience to feel the machine stop. A hard mechanical clack gives the sound a definite ending, which suits a cut back to the present, while an open ending lets the next scene begin before the rewind has finished.
