AI texturing
Using AI to create the colors and materials on a 3D model from a prompt
What is AI texturing?
AI texturing is the use of AI to generate a 3D model’s surface, its colors and often its material maps, from a text prompt or a reference image. The AI paints the model from several angles and projects the result onto its UVs. It is fast for a first pass; seams and hidden areas often need touch-up.
Think of it like this
It is like describing a paint job to a custom car shop and getting the car back finished, then touching up the spots they missed.
Where it fits in a 3D project
- Create
- Surface
- Rig
- Animate
- Render
- Export
Surface: Giving the shape its color and material: UVs, textures and shaders.
How AI texturing works
- 01You give the AI a model with UVs, plus a prompt or a reference image.
- 02It generates images of the model from several angles in the style you asked for.
- 03Those images are projected onto the model and blended into one texture.
- 04Some tools also produce roughness, metallic and normal maps for a PBR material.
AI texturing vs texture painting
| Property | AI texturing | Texture painting |
|---|---|---|
| Who paints | The AI, from a prompt | You, with brushes |
| Speed | Minutes | Hours to days |
| Control over each detail | Broad | Exact |
| Best for | Drafts, props and many variations | Hero assets and precise work |
Use AI texturing for a fast first pass or many variations, then switch to texture painting for details that must be exactly right.
Where AI texturing is used
- Quick texture drafts on new models
- Many color or material variations of one prop
- Texturing scanned or generated meshes that arrive blank
Beginner tip
Give the model clean UVs before you texture it, and name the material in the prompt, such as “scuffed red plastic.” Check the back and underside, where generated textures most often smear.
