Texture painting
Brushing color and detail straight onto a 3D model
What is texture painting?
Texture painting is drawing color and surface detail directly onto a 3D model with a brush, while the strokes are saved into the model’s texture images. Many tools paint several maps at once, so a single stroke can add color, roughness and bumps together.
Think of it like this
It is like painting a ceramic mug: you turn it in your hands and brush straight onto the curve, instead of painting a flat sheet first.

How texture painting works
Texture painting vs procedural texturing
| Property | Texture painting | Procedural texturing |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Hand brush strokes | Math patterns and masks |
| Strength | Exact placement | Fast, rule-based coverage |
| Changing it | Repaint | Adjust a setting |
Most artists combine both: procedural layers for broad wear and dirt, hand painting for the details a design needs.
Where texture painting is used
- Hand-painted stylized characters and props
- Adding scratches, dirt and wear exactly where they belong
- Fixing seams and errors in baked or generated textures
Beginner tip
Paint in separate layers for base color, dirt and wear. Then you can change one later, like toning down the dirt, without redoing the rest.
