Bevel
Cutting a sharp corner into a small slope or curve so it catches light
What is a bevel in 3D modeling?
A bevel replaces a sharp edge or corner with a narrow slanted or rounded strip of faces. Real objects almost never have perfectly sharp edges, so bevels make models look solid and believable by catching a thin line of light along each edge. They also help subdivision models hold their shape.
Think of it like this
It is like sanding the edge of a wooden table: the corner stops being a knife line and becomes a soft strip that glints in the light.

How a bevel works
- 01Select the edges or vertices you want to soften.
- 02Run the bevel tool and drag to set its width.
- 03Add segments to turn a flat slope into a rounded curve.
- 04Adjust the width and profile until the edge reads well from the camera.
Bevel vs chamfer
| Property | Bevel | Chamfer |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Flat or rounded, set by segments | A single flat slope |
| Segments | One or many | One |
| Word common in | 3D art and modeling apps | CAD, engineering and woodworking |
| In Blender | The Bevel tool | A bevel with one segment |
In 3D apps a chamfer is simply a one-segment bevel; add more segments when you want a rounded edge instead of a flat cut.
Where a bevel is used
- Realistic highlights on hard-surface props and products
- Supporting edges on subdivision models
- Rounded edges that print and handle better
Beginner tip
Apply scale before you bevel. If an object is scaled unevenly, the bevel width comes out stretched, wide on one side and thin on the other.
