Subdivision surface
Smoothing a model by splitting each face into smaller ones, level by level
Also called Subsurf, SubD
What is a subdivision surface?
A subdivision surface smooths a mesh by splitting every face into smaller faces and averaging their positions, repeated level by level. It lets you model a simple, low-poly cage and see it as a smooth, rounded form. In Blender it is applied with the Subdivision Surface modifier.
Think of it like this
It is like sanding a rough wooden block: each pass rounds the hard corners a little more, while the block keeps its overall shape.

How a subdivision surface works
- 01You model a simple, mostly quad mesh, called the cage.
- 02Each face is split into four, and new points are averaged with their neighbors.
- 03Repeating the split makes the surface smoother at every level.
- 04Extra edge loops placed near corners keep chosen edges sharp.
Subdivision surface vs smooth shading
| Property | Subdivision surface | Smooth shading |
|---|---|---|
| Changes the shape | Yes, adds faces and rounds it | No, only changes the lighting |
| Outline | Becomes round | Stays faceted |
| Cost | More faces at each level | No extra faces |
| Typical use | Smooth characters and products | Hiding facets on mid-poly models |
Use smooth shading to hide facets cheaply; add a subdivision surface when the outline itself needs to become round.
Where a subdivision surface is used
- Smooth, curved products and vehicles
- Characters modeled at low resolution and smoothed for render
- Building high-poly sources for baking
Beginner tip
Edit with one subdivision level showing in the viewport and render with two or more. The viewport stays responsive, and you still see how the final smooth shape will look.
