3D modeling

Building the shape of an object in 3D software, point by point or brush by brush

What is 3D modeling?

3D modeling is the craft of building the shape of an object in 3D software, usually as a mesh of points, edges and faces. It is the first step of most 3D projects, before texturing, rigging and rendering. Artists model by pushing and pulling simple shapes, sculpting, drawing curves, or starting from a scan or an AI-generated model.

Think of it like this

It is like working with clay that never dries: you can add, cut, smooth and undo as often as you like until the shape looks right.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Vertices are the points, edges join them, and faces fill the gaps.

How 3D modeling works

  1. 01Start from a simple shape and reference photos of the object.
  2. 02Block out the big forms first and ignore small details.
  3. 03Refine the shape with tools like extrude, bevel, loop cuts and sculpting.
  4. 04Clean up the mesh so it is ready for textures, rigging or export.

3D modeling vs CAD

Choose 3D modeling for anything that will be seen, animated or rendered; choose CAD when a part has to be manufactured to exact measurements.

Where 3D modeling is used

  • Characters, props and environments for games and film
  • Product shots and concept visuals for marketing
  • Models for 3D printing and AR previews

Beginner tip

Learn a handful of tools well before chasing more. Extrude, inset, bevel, loop cut and merge cover most of what beginners need, and every 3D app has them.

3D modeling in Morphic

In Morphic for Blender, the 3D tab makes a model from a prompt, a selected image or a viewport capture and imports it with its materials at the 3D cursor. It gives you a starting shape to refine with the modeling tools in this glossary.

3D modeling FAQ

How do I start 3D modeling?
Install a free app such as Blender, learn to move around the viewport, then model simple objects like a mug or a chair. Copying real objects from reference photos teaches proportions faster than inventing shapes from nothing.
What software is used for 3D modeling?
Blender is free and covers modeling, sculpting, texturing and rendering. Maya and 3ds Max are common in studios, ZBrush is a sculpting standard, and CAD apps handle engineering parts. The core ideas carry across all of them.
Can AI do 3D modeling?
Yes, for a first draft. Text-to-3D and image-to-3D tools generate a mesh from a prompt or a picture. Artists usually still clean up the result, fix proportions and redo the topology before animating it.
How long does it take to learn 3D modeling?
Most people can model simple props after a few weeks of regular practice. Clean characters and detailed hard-surface work take much longer. Short daily sessions on small objects build skill faster than rare long ones.
