Polygon

A flat shape with straight sides; meshes are built from many of them

Also called Poly

What is a polygon in 3D?

A polygon is a flat shape with three or more straight sides, and it is the basic building block of most 3D models. Each polygon is bounded by edges that meet at corners called vertices. Triangles, quads and n-gons are all polygons, and thousands of them together form a mesh.

Think of it like this

Polygons are like the tiles in a mosaic: each one is flat and simple, but enough small tiles together can make a curved, detailed picture.

Vertices are the points, edges join them, and faces fill the gaps.

How a polygon works

  1. 01Three or more vertices are placed in 3D space.
  2. 02Edges join the vertices in a closed loop.
  3. 03The area inside the loop is filled, making a flat polygon.
  4. 04Neighboring polygons share edges, so they join into one continuous surface.

Treat them as one idea: say polygon when you count or describe a model, and face when you select or edit part of it.

Where a polygon is used

  • Building real-time 3D models, from small props to characters
  • Measuring how heavy a model is through its polycount
  • Describing a modeling style, as in low-poly art

Beginner tip

Aim for mostly four-sided polygons while you model. They are easier to select in loops, subdivide cleanly, and convert to triangles later without surprises.

Polygon FAQ

What is polygon modeling?
Polygon modeling is building a model by editing polygons directly: extruding faces, cutting edges and moving vertices. It is the most common way to make game and animation assets, alongside sculpting and NURBS curves.
Why are polygons used in 3D?
Because they are simple for computers to draw. Graphics cards are built to fill huge numbers of flat triangles very fast, so any shape broken into polygons can be shown and lit in real time.
How many sides can a polygon have?
Three or more. Triangles have three sides, quads have four, and anything with five or more is called an n-gon. Most artists model in quads and let the software turn them into triangles at the end.
