Image plane
A flat plane in a 3D scene that shows a picture or video, for references and backdrops
What is an image plane in 3D?
An image plane is a flat rectangle in a 3D scene with a picture or video shown on it. Artists use one to hold reference drawings while modeling, to fake a distant backdrop, or to show a screen or poster. In Blender, Add > Image > Mesh Plane creates one sized to match the image.
Think of it like this
It is like pinning a photo to a sheet of cardboard and standing it up on a model set: flat, but it sits in the scene with everything else.
Where it fits in a 3D project
- Create
- Surface
- Rig
- Animate
- Render
- Export

How an image plane works
- 01The app adds a flat plane with the same proportions as the image.
- 02A material shows the image on its surface, and can make transparent areas see-through.
- 03A video file works the same way, playing as the plane’s texture along the timeline.
- 04Move, scale and rotate the plane like any other object.
Image plane vs reference image
| Property | Image plane | Reference image |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A real mesh with a material | An empty that displays a picture |
| In renders | Shows up like any object | Never renders |
| Lighting | Can react to scene lights | Not lit |
| Best for | Backdrops, screens, posters and video in the scene | Modeling guides and blueprints |
Use a reference image for guides you model over, and an image plane when the picture or video should appear in the final render.
Where an image plane is used
- Holding front and side reference drawings while modeling
- Faking a distant background behind a 3D scene
- Showing a video on a screen, sign or window in the scene
Beginner tip
For a backdrop that should look the same under any lighting, pick the shadeless or emission shader option when you add the plane, so scene lights do not darken or tint the image.
Image plane in Morphic
In Morphic for Blender, the Image tab places a generated image on an upright plane at the 3D cursor, and the Video tab places a generated clip on a plane with the video as its texture. Both can be moved like any object.
