Lattice
A simple cage that bends and squashes the object inside it
Also called Lattice deformer, Free-form deformation, FFD
What is a lattice in 3D?
A lattice is a simple 3D grid of control points placed around an object, so moving those few points smoothly bends, squashes or twists the object inside. It reshapes dense meshes without editing their vertices directly, and the effect can be animated or removed. It is also called a lattice deformer or free-form deformation.
Think of it like this
Think of a stretchy mesh bag around a soft ball. Pull or pinch the bag and the ball inside takes on the new shape.

How a lattice works
- 01Add a lattice and scale it to surround the object.
- 02Link the object to it, often with a lattice modifier.
- 03Move the lattice’s control points to bend the cage.
- 04The object deforms smoothly with the cage, while its own vertices stay untouched.
Lattice vs proportional editing
| Property | Lattice | Proportional editing |
|---|---|---|
| Works through | A separate cage of control points | Vertices you select directly |
| Reversible | Yes, remove or reset the cage | No, it edits the mesh |
| Animated | Yes, as a deformer | Only by saving shape keys |
| Best for | Broad bends on dense or many objects | Quick local tweaks to one mesh |
Reach for a lattice for big, adjustable or animated reshapes; use proportional editing for quick one-off nudges.
Where a lattice is used
- Squash and stretch on cartoon props and characters
- Bending text, logos and long objects
- Reshaping dense scans or sculpts in broad strokes
Beginner tip
Keep the lattice resolution low, around three or four points per side. Fewer points give smoother, broader bends; add more only when you need local control.
