Procedural texture
A pattern generated by math rules, with no fixed resolution
What is a procedural texture?
A procedural texture is a pattern generated by math rules rather than painted or photographed, such as noise, waves, cells or wood grain. Because it is calculated, it has no fixed resolution, never visibly repeats unless you want it to, and changes instantly when you adjust a setting.
Think of it like this
It is like a knitting pattern rather than a finished sweater: follow the instructions and you can make it in any size or color.
Where it fits in a 3D project
- Create
- Surface
- Rig
- Animate
- Render
- Export
Surface: Giving the shape its color and material: UVs, textures and shaders.
How a procedural texture works
- 01Pick base patterns, such as noise, cells or stripes, in a node editor.
- 02Adjust their scale, detail and contrast with simple settings.
- 03Combine and color them to build up a material, like rust or marble.
- 04The renderer calculates the pattern at every point as it draws.
Procedural texture vs image texture
| Property | Procedural texture | Image texture |
|---|---|---|
| Made from | Math rules | A painted or photographed image |
| Resolution | Unlimited | Fixed pixel size |
| Editing | Change a setting | Repaint or reshoot |
| Portability | Needs baking to export | Works in any app |
Use procedural textures for flexible surfaces you will keep adjusting, then bake them to images when the asset leaves your app.
Where a procedural texture is used
- Marble, wood and stone that never repeat
- Wear, dirt and rust masks that follow a model’s shape
- Terrain, clouds and sci-fi patterns
Beginner tip
Procedural textures can look too perfect. Mix in a second noise at a different scale to break up the regularity, so the surface feels made by nature.
