Triplanar mapping

Projecting a texture from three directions so no UVs are needed

Also called Triplanar projection

What is triplanar mapping?

Triplanar mapping, also called triplanar projection, textures a model by projecting the same image from three directions, front, side and top, and blending them where they meet. It needs no UVs, so it suits terrain, rocks and generated shapes that would be hard to unwrap.

Think of it like this

Picture three slide projectors aimed at a sculpture from the front, side and top, all showing the same pattern, with soft overlaps where their beams meet.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Surface: Giving the shape its color and material: UVs, textures and shaders.

How triplanar mapping works

  1. 01The image is projected along each of the three main axes.
  2. 02Each point checks which way its surface faces.
  3. 03Faces pointing mostly up take the top projection, and sides take the side ones.
  4. 04Where directions mix, the projections blend to hide the joins.

Use triplanar for natural, tiling surfaces on shapes that are hard to unwrap; use UV mapping when details must land in exact places.

Where triplanar mapping is used

  • Rocks, cliffs and terrain in games
  • Quick texturing of scanned, sculpted or generated models
  • Moss, snow or dust settling on top surfaces

Beginner tip

Pair triplanar mapping with a busy, seamless texture. Bold lines or patterns make the blend zones obvious, while noisy rock or dirt hides them.

Triplanar mapping FAQ

Can I do texturing without UVs?
Yes, with projection methods like triplanar mapping, procedural textures that use object coordinates, or vertex colors. Exporting to a game engine or another app usually still needs UVs and baked images.
Is box mapping the same as triplanar mapping?
Close. Box mapping projects from the sides of a cube, often switching sharply between them. Triplanar mapping uses the same three axes but blends smoothly where directions meet, which hides seams better.
Why does triplanar mapping look blurry in places?
Blur shows up in the blend zones, where two or three projections mix. Narrow the blend so less area is mixed, or choose a texture whose detail hides the overlap.
