Tessellation

Breaking a surface into many small flat faces, usually triangles

What is tessellation in 3D?

Tessellation is splitting a surface into many small flat pieces, usually triangles, so a computer can draw or print it. It turns smooth CAD and NURBS surfaces into meshes, and in games it adds faces on the fly where the camera is close. More pieces give smoother curves and heavier files.

Think of it like this

It is like covering a dome with flat mosaic tiles. Smaller tiles hug the curve better, but you need far more of them.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Export: Saving and sharing the result: file formats, engines and printing.

The same shape with more faces looks smoother and costs more to store and draw.

How tessellation works

  1. 01The software starts from a surface: a curved patch, a CAD shape or a coarse mesh.
  2. 02It splits that surface into triangles at a chosen level of fineness.
  3. 03Tightly curved areas get more, smaller triangles; flat areas get fewer.
  4. 04The triangles go to the renderer, the game engine or a printable file.

Common inCAD export, game enginesModeling and animation

Say tessellation when a surface is cut into triangles for display or export; say subdivision when you are smoothing a mesh you are modeling.

Where tessellation is used

  • Exporting CAD and NURBS models as STL files for printing
  • Adding close-up detail to terrain in game engines
  • Turning displacement maps into real surface bumps

Beginner tip

When exporting from CAD for printing, check the resolution or tolerance setting. Too coarse and curves print faceted; too fine and the file balloons with no visible gain.

Tessellation FAQ

What is tessellation in 3D printing?
It is the step where CAD software turns smooth surfaces into triangles for an STL or similar file. A finer setting gives smoother curves on the printed part and a larger file.
What does tessellation do in games?
It lets the graphics card add triangles to a surface while the game runs, usually near the camera. Paired with a displacement map, it makes ground, rocks and walls look bumpy up close without storing a dense mesh.
Is tessellation the same as triangulation?
No. Triangulation splits existing faces into triangles without adding detail. Tessellation can add many new triangles to follow a curved surface more closely.
