Array modifier
A modifier that repeats an object in rows, grids or circles with adjustable spacing
Also called Array
What is the array modifier?
The array modifier repeats an object in a row, grid or circle, with a count and spacing you can change at any time. One fence post becomes a fence, one step a staircase. Because it is a modifier, the copies update when you edit the original and stay one object until applied.
Think of it like this
Like a rubber stamp rolled along a strip of paper: carve the stamp once, and it prints the same mark as many times as you like.

How the array modifier works
- 01Choose Add Modifier > Generate > Array on the object you want to repeat.
- 02Set Count for the number of copies.
- 03Relative Offset spaces copies by the object’s own size; Constant Offset uses a fixed distance.
- 04Add an Object Offset, often an empty, to rotate or scale each copy for circles and spirals.
Array modifier vs instancing
| Property | Array modifier | Instancing |
|---|---|---|
| Result | One object with repeated geometry | Many objects sharing one mesh |
| Layout | Regular rows, grids, circles or curves | Anywhere, by hand or by scattering |
| Memory | Copies count as real geometry | Shared data, light on memory |
| Move one copy | No, all follow the pattern | Yes, each instance moves freely |
Use the array modifier for evenly spaced repeats like stairs and fences; use instancing when many copies need their own positions, like trees across a hill.
Where the array modifier is used
- Fences, railings, stairs and tiled floors
- Chains and tank tracks, paired with a curve modifier
- Radial shapes such as gears, wheels and rings of columns
Beginner tip
Turn on Merge in the array settings when copies touch. It welds the meeting vertices so the repeats become one continuous surface that smooths cleanly.
