Mirror modifier
A modifier that copies one half of a model to the other side and keeps them in sync
Also called Mirror
What is the mirror modifier?
The mirror modifier copies one half of a model to the other side of an axis and keeps both halves in sync as you edit. You model the left, and the right appears automatically. Because it is a modifier, the copy stays live until you apply it, which suits characters, vehicles and products.
Think of it like this
Like folding a sheet of paper and cutting a shape: open it out and both halves match, because you only ever cut one side.

How the mirror modifier works
- 01Model one half of the object, with its center line on the object’s origin.
- 02Choose Add Modifier > Generate > Mirror, and pick the axis to mirror across.
- 03Turn on Clipping so center vertices cannot cross the middle.
- 04Keep editing one side; the other updates live until you apply the modifier.
Mirror modifier vs symmetry
| Property | Mirror modifier | Symmetry |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A modifier that builds the second half | An option that edits matching points together |
| Mirrored side | Generated, not editable until applied | Real geometry, already there |
| Where in Blender | Modifier Properties, wrench tab | Axis toggles in the viewport header |
| Best for | Building a model from one half | Sculpting or tweaking a full mesh |
Use the mirror modifier while building a symmetrical model from one half; use symmetry options when both halves already exist and you want matching edits.
Where the mirror modifier is used
- Modeling characters and faces one half at a time
- Building cars, furniture and products with matching sides
- Mirroring across another object, such as an empty, to set the center
Beginner tip
Apply scale and rotation before mirroring, and keep the origin on the center line. Most mirror surprises come from an origin in the wrong place or an unapplied transform.
