Auto-rigging

Software that fits a skeleton and skin weights to a character for you

Also called Automatic rigging

What is auto-rigging?

Auto-rigging is software that adds a skeleton and skin weights to a 3D character for you. You mark a few points, such as chin, wrists, elbows and knees, or let AI find them, and the tool fits the bones and binds the mesh. It saves most of the setup on standard bodies.

Think of it like this

Like an adjustable dress form: set a few measurements and a ready-made frame shapes itself to fit the body you give it.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Rig: Adding a skeleton and controls so the model can move.

How auto-rigging works

  1. 01Open a character mesh standing in a neutral T or A pose.
  2. 02Mark key points like chin, wrists and knees, or let the tool detect them.
  3. 03The tool fits a standard skeleton and calculates the skin weights.
  4. 04Test a few poses, then fix any joints that pinch or tear.

Auto-rigging vs manual rigging

Auto-rig standard characters for quick results, and rig by hand when the anatomy is unusual or custom controls matter.

Where auto-rigging is used

  • Getting a scanned or AI-generated character moving fast
  • Prototypes, previs and background characters
  • Putting motion capture or library animations on a new model

Beginner tip

Pose the character with arms and legs clear of the body before auto-rigging. Limbs that touch the torso confuse the weight calculation, and the skin sticks together when the character moves.

Auto-rigging FAQ

Can AI rig a 3D model?
Yes. Several tools use AI to find the joints on a humanoid or animal mesh and fit a skeleton with weights. Results are good on standard bodies and usually need touch-ups on hands, faces and loose clothing.
Does auto rigging work on any character?
It works best on two-legged humanoids and common four-legged animals. Characters with extra limbs, wings or unusual proportions often confuse the tools, so they are still rigged by hand, fully or in part.
Is auto rigging good enough for professional work?
For background characters, prototypes and previs, often yes. Lead characters in films and games usually get a hand-built rig with custom body and face controls.
