Box modeling
Shaping a model by starting from a cube and refining it step by step
What is box modeling?
Box modeling is a way of building a 3D model by starting from a simple primitive, usually a cube, and refining it with extrudes, cuts and edge loops until it matches the shape you want. You work from the big form down to the details, which keeps the mesh clean and easy to control.
Think of it like this
Like sketching with a pencil: rough boxes for the overall shape first, then you refine the outlines and add detail on top.

How box modeling works
- 01Add a cube or other primitive and scale it to the main proportions.
- 02Extrude faces to pull out limbs, handles or other big parts.
- 03Add edge loops and cuts wherever you need more control.
- 04Smooth with subdivision and refine details until the shape is right.
Box modeling vs sculpting
| Property | Box modeling | Sculpting |
|---|---|---|
| Feels like | Building with planes and edges | Shaping digital clay with brushes |
| Mesh | Light and clean from the start | Very dense, usually needs retopology |
| Best for | Props, furniture, simple characters | Faces, creatures, fine organic detail |
| Control | Exact, point by point | Loose and freeform |
Box model when you want a clean, light mesh you control exactly; sculpt when organic detail matters more than clean topology.
Where box modeling is used
- First projects like mugs, chairs and simple robots
- Low-poly game props and characters
- Base meshes to sculpt detail onto later
Beginner tip
Get the proportions right while the mesh is still a few boxes. Fixing the overall shape gets much harder once you have added detail.
