Topology
How the faces and edges of a mesh are laid out and flow across it
Also called Edge flow
What is topology in 3D modeling?
Topology is the layout of a mesh: how its vertices, edges and faces connect, and which way the edges flow across the surface. Good topology follows the form with even, mostly four-sided faces. It decides how well a model smooths, unwraps for textures and bends when animated.
Think of it like this
Topology is like the grain in wood: two planks can be the same shape, but the one whose grain follows the curve bends without cracking.
Where it fits in a 3D project
- Create
- Surface
- Rig
- Animate
- Render
- Export
Create: Building the shape: modeling, sculpting, scanning or generating it.
How topology works
- 01Edges run in loops that follow the model’s main shapes and muscles.
- 02Faces stay evenly sized, with extra detail only where the shape needs it.
- 03Points where the flow changes direction, called poles, sit in flat, quiet areas.
- 04When the model bends, faces stretch and squash smoothly instead of creasing.
Topology vs geometry
| Property | Topology | Geometry |
|---|---|---|
| Describes | How points are connected | Where points sit in space |
| Changes when | You add, remove or reconnect edges | You move vertices |
| Affects | Smoothing, UVs and bending | The silhouette and overall shape |
| Example | Edge loops circling an eye | How deep the eye socket is |
Fix geometry when the shape looks wrong; fix topology when the shape looks right but smooths, textures or bends badly.
Where topology is used
- Characters and faces that need to animate cleanly
- Models that will use a subdivision surface
- Judging whether a sculpt or AI model needs retopology
Beginner tip
Study the wireframes of well-made models before you build your own. Seeing how their loops circle eyes, mouths and joints teaches good topology faster than any rule list.
