Diffuse map

A color texture from older workflows that often includes painted shading

What is a diffuse map?

A diffuse map is a texture that sets the main color of a surface, the part of light that scatters evenly off it rather than reflecting like a mirror. Older and stylized workflows often paint soft shading and shadows into it, which is the main difference from an albedo map.

Think of it like this

It is like a painted theater backdrop: color and shadows are both brushed on, so it looks lit before the stage lights come on.

How a diffuse map works

  1. 01An artist paints or photographs the surface color.
  2. 02In older pipelines, soft shadows and wear are often painted in too.
  3. 03The renderer multiplies the map by the incoming light to get the final color.

Choose albedo for realistic PBR work; a diffuse map with painted shading still suits hand-painted and stylized art.

Where a diffuse map is used

  • Hand-painted, stylized game art
  • Older engines and legacy asset libraries
  • Mobile scenes where most lighting is baked in

Beginner tip

A diffuse map with painted shadows inside a PBR material shows its shadows twice. Clean the shading out first, or keep that map for unlit, stylized shaders.

Diffuse map FAQ

Is diffuse the same as albedo?
Close, but not quite. Both set a surface’s color. Albedo is pure color with no lighting, while a diffuse map may include painted shading. Many apps still label the base color input “diffuse”, which adds to the mix-up.
What is diffuse color?
The color a surface shows when light scatters off it evenly in every direction, like matte paint or chalk. Shiny highlights are a separate part of the light, set by specular or roughness values.
Can I still use diffuse maps?
Yes. Stylized and hand-painted art relies on them, and many asset libraries still ship them. For a realistic PBR material, use a clean diffuse map as the albedo.
