Specular map

A texture that sets how strongly each spot reflects light as a highlight

What is a specular map?

A specular map is a texture that sets how strongly, and sometimes in what color, each part of a surface reflects light as a shiny highlight. It belongs to the specular workflow, where it works alongside a glossiness map. Bright areas give strong reflections and dark areas give faint ones.

Think of it like this

It is like a dimmer switch for shine, set separately for every spot on the surface: polished parts turned up, dusty parts turned down.

How a specular map works

  1. 01Each pixel stores how much light reflects as a highlight, sometimes with a tint.
  2. 02A paired glossiness map sets how sharp that highlight is.
  3. 03The renderer combines both with the diffuse color to shade the surface.

Specular map vs roughness map

Specular says how much a surface shines and roughness says how blurry the shine is; most modern engines use roughness plus metallic.

Where a specular map is used

  • Older and mobile game engines
  • Legacy asset libraries and some scanned materials
  • Fine control over tinted reflections

Beginner tip

Most non-metal surfaces reflect a similar, small amount of light. Keep them in a narrow dark-gray range on the specular map and save the bright values for metal.

Specular map FAQ

What is specular vs glossiness?
Specular sets how much a surface reflects; glossiness sets how sharp that reflection is. In the specular workflow you use both maps together. Glossiness is roughness inverted.
Do I need a specular map?
Usually not, if your engine uses the metallic workflow, as most do. You need one when your tool or asset pack uses the specular workflow, or when you want tinted reflections on non-metals.
What does specular mean in 3D?
Mirror-like. Specular light is the part that bounces off a surface in a clear direction, making highlights and reflections. Diffuse light is the part that scatters evenly.
