Pivot point
The point an object rotates and scales around
Also called Pivot, Origin, Object origin
What is a pivot point in 3D?
A pivot point is the spot an object rotates around, scales from, and is positioned by. In many apps it is the object’s origin, shown as a small dot. Put it in the right place, like a door’s hinge or a lamp’s base, and moving the object feels natural.
Think of it like this
It is the pin in a drawing compass or the hinge on a door: whatever you turn swings around that one fixed point.

How a pivot point works
- 01Every object stores one pivot, often called its origin.
- 02Rotate or scale, and the object turns or grows around that point.
- 03Moving the pivot changes the center without moving the geometry.
- 04Exports keep it, so the object places and animates correctly elsewhere.
Pivot point vs 3D cursor
| Property | Pivot point | 3D cursor |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The point an object turns around | A movable marker in the scene |
| How many | One per object | One per scene |
| Main job | Center for rotating, scaling, placing | Where new objects appear |
| Saved on export | Yes, as the object’s origin | No |
Set an object’s pivot where it should naturally turn, like a hinge; use the 3D cursor as a temporary pivot or a placement marker.
Where a pivot point is used
- Doors, lids and levers that swing on a hinge
- Placing props so they sit on the floor
- Spinning wheels, fans and turntable displays
Beginner tip
Put the pivot at the base of anything that sits on the ground. Then scaling it or snapping it to the floor keeps it standing on the surface instead of sinking in.
