What is a quad in 3D modeling?

A quad is a face with four sides and four corners. Most artists build models mainly from quads because they line up into neat rows, subdivide evenly and bend predictably in animation. When a model goes into a game engine, each quad is split into two triangles behind the scenes.

Think of it like this

Quads are like squares on graph paper: easy to count, easy to follow in rows, and easy to split into smaller squares when you need more detail.

Vertices are the points, edges join them, and faces fill the gaps.

How a quad works

  1. 01Four vertices are joined by four edges into one face.
  2. 02Neighboring quads share edges, forming rows called edge loops.
  3. 03Subdividing splits each quad into four smaller quads, smoothing the shape evenly.
  4. 04At export, each quad becomes two triangles for the graphics card.

Where usedWhile modeling and animatingIn game engines and final exports

Model in quads for clean editing and animation, and let triangles happen at export or on flat, static areas that need them.

Where a quad is used

  • Characters and anything else that will be rigged
  • Models that will use a subdivision surface
  • Clean topology that other artists can edit later

Beginner tip

Keep quads close to square where you can. Very long, thin quads shade unevenly and make it harder to add edge loops later.

Quad FAQ

Why are quads better than triangles?
For modeling, quads form clean loops you can select and cut in one click, and they subdivide smoothly. Triangles break those loops. In the final render they draw the same, since engines turn quads into triangles anyway.
Should I use quads or tris?
Use quads while you model, especially on anything that will bend or be subdivided. A few triangles on flat, hidden or static areas are fine. Game exports end up as all triangles anyway.
What is all-quad topology?
It is a mesh made entirely of quads, with no triangles or n-gons. It is the target for characters and subdivision models because every edge loop runs cleanly. Hard-surface props and game assets often mix in a few triangles without trouble.
