Seamless texture

An image whose edges match, so it repeats with no visible join

Also called Tileable texture

What is a seamless texture?

A seamless texture is an image whose edges match up, so copies placed side by side join with no visible line. Also called a tileable texture, it can repeat across a floor, wall or terrain of any size and stay sharp, because a small image covers a huge area.

Think of it like this

It is like a roll of wallpaper: each strip’s pattern lines up with the next, so the wall reads as one continuous design.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Surface: Giving the shape its color and material: UVs, textures and shaders.

How a seamless texture works

  1. 01Start from a photo, a painting or a procedural pattern.
  2. 02Blend or offset the edges so left matches right and top matches bottom.
  3. 03Set the material to repeat the image, and scale it to the object.

Where a seamless texture is used

  • Floors, walls, grass and rock in large environments
  • Fabric patterns on clothing and furniture
  • Ground cover for terrain in games

Beginner tip

Tile it three by three before you use it. Any stain, crack or bright spot that repeats will jump out as a pattern, so remove it or tone it down.

Seamless texture FAQ

How do I make a seamless texture?
Offset the image by half its width and height so the edges move to the middle, then paint over the visible joins. Many image editors and texturing tools have a make-tileable option, and procedural textures tile by design.
Is a tileable texture the same as a seamless texture?
Yes. Both names mean an image that repeats without visible edges.
How do I hide texture repetition?
Mix two scales of the same texture, blend in a second material through a noise mask, scatter decals over it, or rotate tiles at random. Breaking up big flat areas with props helps too.
