Trim sheet

A texture of reusable detail strips shared across many models

What is a trim sheet?

A trim sheet is a texture made of horizontal strips of reusable detail, such as molding, panel edges, bolts and worn metal trim. Artists line up each model’s UV faces with the matching strip, so one sheet can texture a whole building or ship interior.

Think of it like this

It is like a roll of patterned ribbons: cut a length of whichever pattern you need and wrap it along any edge.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  6. Export

Surface: Giving the shape its color and material: UVs, textures and shaders.

How a trim sheet works

  1. 01Design a sheet of strips that tile left to right, each a different detail.
  2. 02Model pieces with edges and bevels sized to match the strips.
  3. 03Line up each face’s UVs with the strip whose detail it needs.
  4. 04Reuse the same sheet across many models, so they all match.

Trim sheet vs texture atlas

PropertyTrim sheetTexture atlas
LayoutTiling strips of general detailUnique islands for specific objects
ReuseShared across many modelsEach patch belongs to one object
Texel densityConsistent everywhereDepends on how you pack

Trim sheets suit large modular sets with repeating detail; atlases suit a fixed group of unique props.

Where a trim sheet is used

  • Trim sheet texturing for modular walls, floors and pipes
  • Sci-fi corridors and ship interiors
  • Keeping many assets in one matching style

Beginner tip

Plan the sheet before you model. Fix the strip heights first, then size your bevels and panels to match, and texturing becomes a quick job of sliding UVs.

Trim sheet FAQ

How do you use a trim sheet?
Select a face, unwrap it as a straight strip, then move and scale its UVs over the matching row of the sheet. Because the strips tile sideways, the face can be any length.
Why do game artists use trim sheets?
They save memory and time. One sheet replaces dozens of unique textures, every asset matches in detail and sharpness, and editing the sheet updates everything that uses it.
Can a trim sheet include tiling textures?
Yes. Many sheets combine trim strips with a few small tiling areas, such as plain metal or concrete, so walls and edges all come from one image.
