Smart UV project
Blender’s automatic unwrap that cuts a model into flat pieces by angle, no seams needed
Also called Smart UV Project
What is Smart UV project in Blender?
Smart UV project is an automatic Blender unwrap that cuts a model into flat pieces wherever the surface bends past an angle you set, with no seams needed. It is fast and works on almost anything, though it makes many small islands with cuts in visible places.
Think of it like this
Like cutting a cardboard box apart at every fold: quick and flat, though you end up with more pieces than a careful unfold would give.

How Smart UV project works
- 01In Edit Mode, select all faces with A.
- 02Press U and choose Smart UV Project.
- 03Set Angle Limit: lower values make more, flatter islands; higher values make fewer, larger ones.
- 04Add Island Margin so pieces do not bleed into each other when baked.
Smart UV project vs manual unwrapping
| Property | Smart UV project | Manual unwrapping |
|---|---|---|
| Seams | Chosen for you by angle | Marked by you |
| Speed | Seconds | Minutes to hours |
| Islands | Many, small, often scattered | Few, large, placed with care |
| Best for | Hard-surface props, baking, quick tests | Characters and close-up assets |
Use Smart UV project for quick props and baking where cuts will not show; unwrap by hand when seams must hide and textures will be painted.
Where Smart UV project is used
- Quick UVs for hard-surface props and scenery
- Preparing generated or scanned models for baking
- Getting a usable layout before a texture test
Beginner tip
Apply scale before running it, or islands from different parts come out at different sizes for the same texture. Ctrl+A > Scale in Object Mode fixes it.
