Smooth shading

Making faceted models look rounded by blending light across faces

Also called Shade smooth

What is smooth shading?

Smooth shading is a display setting that makes a low-poly surface look rounded by blending the lighting across its faces. It adds no geometry: the outline stays faceted, but the light no longer breaks at every edge. Its opposite, flat shading, lights each face as one flat panel.

Think of it like this

It is like rubbing a pencil drawing with your finger: the lines are still there, but the shading between them blends into one soft gradient.

How smooth shading works

  1. 01Each vertex gets a normal, the direction its surface faces.
  2. 02Smooth shading averages the normals of the faces that share each vertex.
  3. 03Lighting blends between vertices, so neighboring faces read as one curve.
  4. 04Edges marked sharp, or steeper than an angle limit, keep a crisp break.

Smooth shading vs flat shading

Use smooth shading for curved surfaces and flat shading for a faceted look; most hard-surface models mix both, with steep edges kept sharp.

Where smooth shading is used

  • Rounded objects like bottles, characters and fruit
  • Low-poly models that need to look smoother
  • Hard-surface models with sharp edges kept crisp

Beginner tip

If smooth shading leaves dark smudges across a flat area, the mesh needs support. Add edge loops near sharp corners, mark those edges sharp, or use smoothing by angle.

Smooth shading FAQ

How do I shade smooth in Blender?
In object mode, right-click the object and choose Shade Smooth, or use Object > Shade Smooth. Recent versions also offer Shade Auto Smooth, which keeps edges above an angle you set sharp. Shade Flat switches back.
Why does Shade Smooth look weird?
It blends light across every edge, including corners that should stay sharp, which causes dark gradients and smudges. Mark the sharp edges, smooth by angle, or add supporting edge loops near the corners.
Does smooth shading add polygons?
No. It only changes how light is calculated across existing faces. To actually round off the shape and its outline, use a subdivision surface.
