Texture atlas

One image that packs the textures of many objects side by side

What is a texture atlas?

A texture atlas is one large image that packs the textures of several objects, or several parts of one object, side by side. Each model’s UVs point to its own patch of the atlas. Sharing one image means fewer separate textures to load and draw, so scenes run faster.

Think of it like this

It is like a sheet of postage stamps: many small designs printed on one page, each torn off where it is needed.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Surface: Giving the shape its color and material: UVs, textures and shaders.

How a texture atlas works

  1. 01Collect the objects that will share one material.
  2. 02Lay out all their UV islands together in one square, without overlaps.
  3. 03Bake or paint their textures into that single image.
  4. 04The engine draws them all with one material, in fewer passes.

Texture atlas vs trim sheet

PropertyTexture atlasTrim sheet
LayoutUnique islands for specific objectsRepeating strips any object can reuse
UVsEach patch used onceMany faces share the same strip
Best forProp sets, characters, small batchesLarge modular environments

Use an atlas to bundle a fixed set of objects; use a trim sheet when many pieces of architecture should share the same details.

Where a texture atlas is used

  • Bundling a room’s props into one material
  • Mobile and web games with tight performance budgets
  • Characters whose clothes and gear share one texture

Beginner tip

Leave a few pixels of padding between islands. As the engine shrinks the texture with distance, colors bleed across tight gaps and show up as thin seams.

Texture atlas FAQ

Why use a texture atlas?
Speed. Each separate material usually means a separate draw call, a request the game sends to the graphics card. Fewer materials mean fewer calls and smoother frame rates, especially on phones and in the browser.
Is a texture atlas the same as a sprite sheet?
They are close cousins. A sprite sheet packs 2D images, often animation frames, into one picture. A texture atlas does the same for 3D surfaces, mapped through UVs.
What size should a texture atlas be?
Big enough to keep every object at your target texel density, and usually a power of two, such as 2048 or 4096 pixels square, which graphics cards handle most efficiently.
