Viewport shading

How the viewport draws your scene: wireframe, solid, material preview or rendered

What is viewport shading in Blender?

Viewport shading is the setting that decides how a 3D app draws your scene while you work. Blender has four modes: wireframe for edges only, solid for plain shapes, material preview for textures under a stock lighting setup, and rendered for a live look through the render engine.

Think of it like this

It is like swapping between a pencil sketch, a clay model, a painted model and a lit photo of the same room, without moving anything.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Create: Building the shape: modeling, sculpting, scanning or generating it.

How viewport shading works

  1. 01The four mode buttons sit at the top right of the 3D viewport.
  2. 02Press Z over the viewport to open a pie menu with all four.
  3. 03The small arrow beside the buttons opens options such as lighting, color and backface culling.
  4. 04Heavier modes look closer to the final render but redraw more slowly.

Where viewport shading is used

  • Checking shape and topology in solid or wireframe
  • Previewing textures and materials before you set up lights
  • Testing your own lighting live before a final render

Beginner tip

Work in solid mode most of the time: it is the fastest and shows shape clearly. Switch to material preview to check textures, and to rendered only when you are judging your own lights.

Viewport shading FAQ

What are the viewport shading modes in Blender?
There are four. Wireframe draws only edges. Solid draws plain shapes with simple studio light. Material preview shows materials and textures under a built-in environment light. Rendered shows the scene through the active render engine with your own lights and world.
How do I see textures in the Blender viewport?
Switch to material preview or rendered mode. In solid mode you can also open the shading options and set the color to Texture. If a texture shows bright pink, Blender cannot find the image file.
Material preview vs rendered: what is the difference?
Material preview uses a built-in environment light and fast drawing, and by default it ignores your scene’s lights and world. Rendered uses the scene’s render engine, lights and world, so it matches the final image more closely but runs slower.
Why does my model look gray in Blender?
Solid mode, the default, draws each object in a simple viewport color, which starts out gray. That is normal. Switch to material preview to see real colors and textures.
