Use cases

Lift a portrait off a busy street

A phone photo puts the face and the crowd behind it in equal focus. Morphic separates the subject and softens everything past the shoulders, so the eye lands on the person straight away. The falloff builds gradually, the way a fast lens would render the distance.

Make a product jump off the shelf

Shoot a product where it sits, then blur the clutter around it so the item reads clearly. The sharp zone stays on the label and the edges, while the shelving and neighbouring boxes drop back into a soft wash. It turns an ordinary catalogue snap into something that looks styled.

Give a headshot a studio look

A plain room behind a headshot flattens the shot. Ask for a shallow depth of field and the wall, the door, and the plant melt into a smooth background while the face stays crisp. It is the fastest way to make a self-shot profile picture feel like it came from a photographer.

Focus attention on food

A dish on a busy table competes with cutlery, glasses, and the next plate over. Blur the surroundings and the food becomes the clear subject, with the table dropping into a warm, out-of-focus base. Dial the strength up for a dreamy look or down to keep a hint of the setting.

FAQs

How does the background blur work?
Morphic reads the photo and separates the subject from everything behind it, then softens the background while leaving the subject sharp. Instead of a flat blur over the whole frame, it builds a falloff that gets stronger further from the subject, the way a shallow lens renders depth. The subject edges stay clean so hair and shoulders do not smear into the soft area.
Is this the same as real lens bokeh?
It is a close approximation, not a physical lens. The model estimates depth and applies a graduated blur that mimics how a wide aperture throws a background out of focus, but it is generated, not captured through glass. For most portraits and product shots the result reads as a proper shallow depth of field.
Can I control how strong the blur is?
Yes. Ask for a gentle separation or a heavy, creamy background and Morphic adjusts the strength of the falloff. You can also describe where the focus should sit so the sharp zone lands on the face or the product rather than something behind it.
Will the edges of the subject look cut out?
The aim is a soft, natural transition rather than a hard cutout. Because the blur is graduated and the subject boundary is refined before the falloff is applied, fine edges like flyaway hair keep some definition. If a stray edge looks harsh, a rerun usually cleans it, and reruns cost nothing.
What kind of photos work best?
Any shot with a clear subject in front of a busier background: portraits, pets, products on a shelf, a dish on a table. A photo taken on a phone with everything in focus is the ideal candidate, since that is exactly what the blur is meant to fix.
Does it run in the browser?
Yes. Everything runs on Morphic in the browser, so there is nothing to install. Upload a photo, ask to blur the background, and export the finished image from the same canvas.
