Use cases

Free a subject shot on a black sweep

Studio and dramatic shots often sit on a black backdrop that you now need gone. Segmentation lifts the person or object off cleanly while keeping their dark clothing and shaded edges, which a plain black key would strip away. The result is a clean cutout you can drop anywhere.

Keep dark hair and clothing intact

Dark hair against black is the classic case where a cutout eats into the subject. Because the model reads the outline rather than the colour, a black hoodie, dark curls, or a shadowed jawline stay put while only the backdrop goes. You keep the detail that makes the shot look real.

Move a product off its black backdrop

Products photographed on black look striking but lock you into one background. Cut the item out and you can drop it onto white for a listing, a colour for a banner, or a scene for an ad. The dark and reflective parts of the product survive the cut instead of dissolving into the backdrop.

Swap black for the background you want

Once the subject is isolated, the black is just a starting point. Place the cutout on transparency, on a solid colour, or generate a new backdrop on the same canvas. It turns a single black-background shot into a flexible asset you can restyle for different uses.

FAQs

How does the black background remover work?
The model segments the subject from the black backdrop by reading the shape of the subject, not by keying out a single dark colour. That matters because a plain black key also eats dark hair, shadowed clothing, and shaded edges. Segmentation tells the subject apart from the background, so the dark parts of the person or object stay while the backdrop goes.
Will it eat into dark parts of my subject?
That is the exact failure this avoids. A colour-key approach removes everything near black, which strips a black jacket, dark hair, or a shadow side along with the backdrop. Because the model works from the subject outline instead, those dark areas are kept and only the background is dropped.
What about fine edges like hair or fur?
Wispy hair, fur, and frayed edges are where a hard black backdrop is trickiest. The model holds as much of that detail as it can rather than cutting a hard line around the silhouette. If an edge comes back too soft or too sharp, rerun to compare, which costs nothing.
What do I get back?
A transparent PNG with the subject on a clear canvas, so you can place it over white, a colour, or another photo. If you would rather swap the black for a specific backdrop, you can generate a new background on the same canvas once the subject is isolated.
Does the backdrop have to be pure black?
No. It works on a true black studio sweep and on an uneven near-black background alike, because it is separating the subject rather than matching a colour value. A very dark, low-contrast subject against black is the hardest case, and there a rerun or a different model often gives a cleaner separation.
Does it run in the browser?
Yes. The remover runs on Morphic in the browser, so there is nothing to install. Upload the shot, let the black backdrop drop away, and export the cutout from the same canvas.
